New iOS 5 Apps

October 15, 2011 by Webhead

Find My Friends

This is an app I wanted to do for a while, but never got around to actually doing it.  The app lets you find your friends on a map.  You can request to temporarily or permanently follow a friend.  Once your friend accepts, you can see where they are.  A benefit of this for me is if someone is coming to pick me up or we are both at a large crowded event, we can spot each other.  In my one day of using this however, the location of my friend and sometimes myself is not very accurate.  In a matter of minutes, my friend jumped from one house to another to an onramp.  Find My Friends is available in the App Store for the iOS 5.

One feature I would like to see in this app is an alert function.  So if a friend were coming to pick me up, I could set an alarm to trigger when my friend is within a certain area.

Cards

This is a pretty cool app where you can create you own cards with a personal message and a photo.  Once you enter your apple id you can pay $2.99 in the US which includes the postage and the card will be physically sent.  Cards is available in the App Store for the iOS 5.

Requesting a Refund from iTunes

October 1, 2011 by Webhead

Problem

I recently purchased an App from the App Store and it does not do what it said it is supposed to do.  I am not happy with my purchase and would like a refund.   How do I get a refund from Apple?

Solution

  1. Launch iTunes on your computer
  2. In the upper right corner of iTunes, click on your account ID.  Or if you click on the arrow next to it, in the dropdown, click “Account”.
  3. Click on the “Purchase History” button.
  4. Find and select the date where you purchased the item.
  5. Click on the “Report a Problem” button.
  6. Explain that you would like a refund and explain the reason why.  It’s best to be polite and detailed.  Apple does not simply give refunds to anyone who wants one.  You’ll need a valid reason as to why you deserve a refund.
    1.  Something like an audio file being corrupt and not being able to playback is a good argument for a refund.
    2. Simply not liking something is not a good argument for a refund.
    3. Apple will not refund you anything if the purchase was made over 90 days ago.
    4. Remember, Apple did not create the product, they are only the middleman.  They have millions of products in the App Store and cannot make sure each product does what it claims to.  Be polite and you should at least get a response.
  7. Click “Submit”.  Apple usually responds within 48 hours to let you know if can get a refund or not.

HTC Thunderbolt 4G – A lot of Power

September 27, 2011 by Webhead

If you have the Verizon HTC Thunderbolt, you may notice that your battery life goes down a bit too fast.  This is because the 4G antenna takes up a lot of power.  There is no easy way to switch it between 3G and 4G, but there is a way.

To switch the phone between 3G and 4G, go into the Dialer and call *#*#4636#*#*

This will bring you to Thunderbolt’s Test Menu.  Go to Phone Information and Set Preferred Network Type however you want.  Options are: LTE and EV-DO, EV-DO only, and LTE mode.   Remember, this is a Test Menu so be careful what you change!

This tip was found on http://pocketnow.com/android/how-to-switch-between-3g-and-4g-on-htc-thunderbolt.  They also have a screenshot on what you can expect to see.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

September 22, 2011 by Webhead

Earlier this month, the  Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition was released.  It costs $99 and includes 1 year membership to the Call of Duty Elite.  This includes all the downloadable content for Call of Duty which they say is 20 pieces over a 9 month period.  It also includes a bunch of other things that I don’t care about.

I’m very undecided as I’m sure many others are.  Is it worth it to pay $30 extra for  new maps?  Of the last 2 Modern Warfares I bought 3 map packs total.  I’m leaning towards a “no” since history says I’ll probably buy at most 1 map pack.

GoDaddy Refund

September 16, 2011 by Webhead

Today I learned GoDaddy offers a refund if you cancel your hosting plan early.  I couldn’t really find a straight answer for this and wanted to be sure.  So I emailed support and they replied pretty quickly saying they would refund the unused months.  To be sure this still applies and applies to you, send support a ticket request.

2016 update:  You only have 30? or so days to get a refund.  After that, NO REFUNDS!
